Most Dangerous Streets and Intersections in the Bronx
In the Bronx, the number of injuries and fatalities due to traffic accidents is lower than in some parts of the country due in part to the high rate of mass transit use. But certain roadways in the Bronx do pose dangers.
The following are some examples of intersections where injury-causing accidents occurred in recent months:
- Third Avenue and East 149 Street
- Third Avenue and East 153 Street
- Third Avenue and Westchester Avenue
- Alexander Avenue and East 134 Street
- Brook Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard
- Brown Place and Bruckner Boulevard
- Bruckner Boulevard and East 138 Street
- Bruckner Boulevard and East 140 Street
- Bruckner Boulevard and St. Anns Avenue
- East 133 Street and Willow Avenue
- East 135 Street and Major Deegan Expressway
- East 139 Street and St Anns Avenue
- East 140 Street and Morris Avenue
- East 143 Street and Morris Avenue
- East 149 Street and Walton Avenue
- East Bay Avenue and Manida Street
- Fox Street and Westchester Avenue
- Garrison Avenue and Tiffany Street
- Hunts Point Avenue and Lafayette Avenue
These are - by far - not the only locations of Bronx car crashes. However, it tells you how often accidents happen across the entire borough.
Motorist Accidents With Injuries
East 138 Street at Alexander Avenue saw the highest number of motorist injuries in the Bronx in a recent year.
In addition, several other streets and intersections had high numbers of injuries to motorists:
- East Fordham Road at Southern Boulevard, 29 injured
- East 135 Street at Willis Avenue, 21 injured
- University Avenue at West Fordham Road, 18 injured
- East Gun Hill Road at Bronx River Parkway, 18 injured
Other intersections were the sites of accidents with fatalities.
One motorist died at each of the following seven intersections:
- Marble Hill Avenue at W 228th Street
- Bruckner Boulevard at Edgewater Road
- Jerome Avenue at East 175 Street
- East 222 Street at Eastchester Road
- Peartree Avenue at Coop City Boulevard
- Westchester Avenue at Burr Avenue
- Commerce Avenue at Newbold Avenue
Distracted driving ranks as one of the top causes of vehicle crashes, and AAA offers tips for motorists to avoid distractions. Drivers should avoid anything that takes their eyes and attention from the road. To stay safe, attend to any tasks before you leave or after you arrive at your destination, not while you’re driving.
In addition, actively scan the road as you drive, using your mirrors and watching for bicyclists and pedestrians. Stow any loose items so they don't fall onto the car's floorboard, and adjust your GPS, seats, mirrors, and music before you get on the road.
Other common causes of car accidents in the Bronx include speeding, running red lights, aggressive driving, and impaired driving. No matter how a driver was negligent, they should be liable for all the injuries they cause to other motorists.
Cyclist Accident Injuries
Cyclists suffered injuries at each of these intersections in the Bronx recently:
- Ogden Avenue at West 169 Street (one cyclist fatality)
- East 149 Street at Morris Avenue (four cyclists injured)
- East Fordham Road at Jerome Avenue
- East 149 Street at Saint Ann’s Avenue
- East Gun Hill Road at Webster Avenue
- Saint Ann’s Avenue at Msgr. Gerald J. Ryan Boulevard
- East 163 Street at Tinton Avenue
- East 174 Street at Southern Boulevard
- Crotona Avenue at East Tremont Avenue
- East Gun Hill Road at Bronx River Parkway
- West 182 Street at Davidson Avenue
If you ride a bicycle in the Bronx, stay alert and follow all traffic laws. On a bike, you have less protection than in a car, and the chances of injury or death in an accident are greater.
To stay safe:
- Ride only on the correct side of the street, in the direction of traffic, and never run red lights or stop signs.
- Ride single file.
- Don’t ride on sidewalks.
- When moving more slowly than traffic, stay as far right as possible, but leave enough room to avoid hitting the curb.
- When moving at the speed of traffic, join traffic for maximum visibility.
- Never pass on the right.
- Use proper hand signals when turning.
- Always wear a properly fastened helmet that fits you correctly.
- Wear brightly colored clothing, and use reflectors and lights.
- Be predictable and consistent as you ride.
Even the safest cyclists can still suffer injuries when drivers are negligent. Even if you follow all safety tips, you can never control the actions of others, and careless drivers are everywhere in the Bronx, causing injuries to cyclists regularly.
Pedestrian Accident Injuries
A significant number of pedestrians also suffered injuries or died on the Bronx’s roadways in a recent year. Two pedestrians died on Grand Concourse at East 170 Street—the highest number of traffic fatalities at any one intersection for the year.
In addition, one pedestrian died at each of the following intersections and roads:
- Baychester Avenue
- East 170 Street
- Boston Road at Delavall Avenue
Intersections and roads where injuries to pedestrians occurred included:
- East Fordham Road at Jerome Avenue = 12 injured
- Sedgwick Avenue at West Fordham Road = seven injured
- East Gun Hill Road at White Plains Road = seven injured
- East Tremont Avenue at Firefighters Boulevard = seven injured
- East 233 Street at White Plains Road = seven injured
Pedestrians should try to make themselves visible to drivers, especially at dusk, dawn, nighttime, and poor weather conditions. Nearly one-third of pedestrian fatalities nationwide happen between 8 p.m. and midnight.
To maximize your visibility, wear light-colored clothes or - better yet - reflective clothing at night. In the daytime, wear brightly colored clothes. In addition, try to stay in areas with good lighting, especially if you’re crossing the street, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of their cars.
Pedestrians should also avoid distractions. Don’t text, and don’t wear headphones as you walk. Follow all signals and rules of the road, and stay aware of the traffic around you. Always use crosswalks, and don’t assume drivers will stop.
Like cyclists, however, pedestrians are at risk for collisions and injuries even if they do everything right and use all possible caution. Pedestrians crossing in a crosswalk with the right-of-way regularly suffer injuries when a driver does not pay attention and hits them.
