Which Hospitals Performed Best — and Worst?
Unfortunately, some hospitals within the city stand out for their poor showings in certain ranking areas. In the Bronx, scores include:
- Montefiore Medical Center’s Weiler Hospital (Einstein) and Jacobi Medical Center tied for the Bronx’s high facility scores for complications, at 1.29. Meanwhile, N. Central Bronx Hospital scored the lowest rate of complications, at 0.77.
- Calvary Hospital Inc. had, by far, the highest rate both in the Bronx and in the entire city in the category of “deaths - other,” at 3.07. Montefiore Medical Center-Wakefield Hospital had the lowest rate of deaths in Bronx hospitals, at 0.83.
- All 12 of the Bronx hospitals had similar customer satisfaction rates hovering around 60 percent. However, Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center showed the lowest rating, at 59.77 percent.
- Lincoln also had the highest rate of patient readmissions, at 18.10 percent. St. Barnabas Hospital Health System had the lowest rate of the Bronx hospitals, at 15.7 percent.
- For bloodstream infections, Lincoln again showed the highest rate, at 2.07 per 1,000 instances. Montefiore Medical Center - Moses Division had the lowest rate by far, at 0.27.
- St. Barnabas Hospital Health System had the highest rate of surgical infections, at 1.97 per 100 instances. Meanwhile, Lincoln performed best in this category with just 0.15 surgical infections per 100.
- Montefiore Medical Center - Montefiore Westchester Square had the highest number of complaints received, at 1.5 per 10,000 patient days. Calvary Hospital Inc. had the lowest rate of complaints in the Bronx, at 0.2 per 10,000 patient days.
For New York City as a whole, Kings County Hospital Center showed the highest rate of complications, at 1.58. Additional scores within the city included:
- The Hospital for Special Surgery had the highest patient satisfaction rating in the city, at 73.55 percent.
- Mount Sinai Brooklyn showed the highest rate of patient readmissions, at 18.7 percent.
- The Hospital for Special Surgery had the city’s highest rate of bloodstream infections, at 10.74 per 1,000 instances.
- Metropolitan Hospital Center had the highest rate of surgical infections, at 2.32 per 100 instances.
Among all the city’s hospitals, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai logged the highest number of patient complaints, at 23.7 per 10,000 patient days.
